OS X 10.2.5 Woes

Well, as stable as OS X 10.2.4 is and I do love the OS, I downloaded the standalone updater to 10.2.5 (uh, you may not want to download this!) and on reboot, kernel panic. Bummer.

Now, ok, I had a week old backup but still.. this machine has been in for a whole new motherboard and dual processors as explained in detail here. I had visions of this problem happening yet again.

I read on Apple Discussion forums that it might be 3rd party RAM not being to the OS X specification. I have a 256MB that is original, a free 256MB chip that Flymilesmicro.com who sold me the machine tossed in, and a 512MB Stick from OWC(GREAT FOLKS!!!!!). I tried all configs, one, two, all seperate. No joy :-(

So, off to recover from my backup since I could not downgrade from my installer CD's to 10.2.0. Bummer. OK, my backup 60GB Firewire/USB drive was not bootable for some reason, but my backup for my mailserver booted the FW drive. WOW!

I knew it was a week old backup and I have a lot of stuff on servers instead of local. Booted to the mail server clone, wiped my dual 867 HD and then CCC'ed from the FW -> the Dual. Reboot and bam! All set.

I think I will go donate to Mike Bombich who built and maintains CCC right now! His site is worth a look for any OS X user. Great tips, superb developer.
